It is the end of May (though it feels like the beginning of April). Literally multiple games have been played, but the spread isn't even. Some teams have played 6, some as few as 3. Every time Storm has a game, it rains and the permits get pulled. Pause to absorb the irony of that.
Hard as it is to believe, Storm and Broadway are doing a lot of winning. In nine games, they have 1 loss between them (Storm beat Broadway). Over in the VP Division, Re/Max, who picked first overall in the 2019 WMSPL Draft, is playing nearly .600 ball and leads the division by a game over Hanet. Is the draft THAT important?
The President's/Mid-Season/WMSPL Tournament begins tonight, with a healthy 7 teams participating. Every year there are a few complaints that this tournament arrives too early in the season, and not enough ball has been played to loosen the bodies before playing 4-5 games in 2 days. This year it's even worse due to the weather having cancelled a bunch of the games. Let's hope no one really injures themselves.
#1. BROADWAY
(2-1-0 This Week; 5-1-0 Overall; Tied for 1st in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 1)
Tied at the top of the division with the Falcons, Broadway continues to dominate. They're averaging over 22 runs per game, and their only loss came to Storm. They enter this weekend's tournament as defending champions and are surely favourites to repeat.
#2. FALCONS
(2-1-0 This Week; 5-1-0 Overall; Tied for 1st in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 2)
A decisive move by Falcons' GM Timmy to make the early season coaching change from SLF to Hobo is paying off. The Falcons are scoring at the beginning of the games! If it weren't for a walk-off loss to the Rebels on Sunday, the Falcons would be 6-0 and the apocalypse would be upon us. As usual, the Falcons have a team in the tournament, and expectations are high. They haven't won it since 2013... are they due?
#3. STORM
(1-0-0 This Week; 3-0-0 Overall; 3rd in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 3)
Storm remains undefeated, but that's not as hard as it sounds if you never play a game. They passed their first big test of the season when they beat Broadway by ten on Sunday. Storm were mid-season tournament finalists last year, and they're always a threat to win it.
#4. RE/MAX CROSSROADS
(3-0-1 This Week; 3-2-1 Overall; 1st in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 9)
Hang onto your butts, here comes Re/Max! A stellar 3-0-1 week for them, including a victory over the A's, puts them at the top of the VP Division, for the first time in who knows how long. Re/Max is one of seven teams in the tournament this weekend, and if last year's playoffs can tell us anything, it's that everyone has a shot to win.
#5. A'S (TIE)
(1-2-0 This Week; 3-2-0 Overall; 6th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 4)
After beginning the season 2-0, they've dropped two of their last three and come into the tournament on a sour note. Depending on whether you look at the division section of the standings page, or the overall section, the A's are either last or 5th in the division. Algorithms FTW!
#5. REBELS (TIE)
(2-1-0 This Week; 3-2-0 Overall; 5th? in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 6)
The league wishes Joe a speedy recovery, but his team doesn't seem to be doing so bad without him! They won two of three this week, and will be fresh come Sunday for their matchup against what's likely to be an exhausted Storm team.
#7. EEEEEEG WEALTH
(0-1-0 This Week; 2-1-0 Overall; 4th in President's Division)
(Rank last week: 5)
Iggy drops two spots because they only played one game this week, and lost. Eventually, the rain will stop, right?
#8. HANET PLASTICS
(1-0-1 This Week; 1-2-1 Overall; 2nd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 8)
Hanet did not enter a team in the mid-season tournament. They also suggested that, in the mid-season tournament, the league experiment with a rule that if the pitcher is struck with a batted ball, and the pitcher wasn't in the process of fielding that ball, the batter is out.
#9. BREW CREW
(1-2-0 This Week; 2-4-0 Overall; tied for 3rd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 7)
Looking forward to the Brew Crew's games in this weekend's tournament. With the bigger crowds that a tournament brings (is 11 people a crowd?), more will experience, enjoy, and appreciate the efforts the Brew Crew are making to bring FUN to the WMSPL. I hope they have a full DJ setup and blast the walk-up music so loud they hear it on the other diamond. Next up, adding a PA announcer to introduce the batter. Even better would be if the PA announcer also does the opposing team, but in such a monotone that you FEEL their disgust. Good times!
#10. GREENTHUMB
(1-1-0 This Week; 1-3-0 Overall; Tied for 3rd in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 11)
Greenthumb moves up because they won a game this week, and only lost one. They're also in the tournament this week, so let's hope Todd's been to the tanning bed so we're all not completely blinded.
#11. COULAS BONE CRUSHERS
(1-2-0 This Week; 1-5-0 Overall; 5th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 12)
Coulas moves up a spot with a win, their first of the season.
#12. SURGE
(0-4-0 This Week; 0-6-0 Overall; 6th in Vice President's Division)
(Rank last week: 10)
I resisted the temptation to put every team who entered this weekend's tournament tied for 1st in the rankings, and every team who didn't enter, tied for last. Tournament ball is fun!
