Friday, 7:30 pm: Coulas at Falcons
The Falcons began the tournament confident. Some notable absentees for the weekend meant there wouldn't be much rest for the defence. That defence was tested early, and the Falcons tripped out of the gate. Down 8-2 after the top of the third, the Falcon bats finally showed up. Two in the third and four in the fourth gave them the lead, and the defence held Coulas to only one run the rest of the way. In terms of the goal of playing Sunday, one down, one to go.
Falcons 16, Coulas 9.
Saturday, 12:00 pm: Falcons at Isotopes
A win in this game would give the Falcons a well deserved pizza break before the Sunday games, and the team worked their tails off to earn it. Things began as they tend to do for the Falcons in pressure games. A doughnut on four batters in the top of the first and a MAX6 for the Isotopes put the visitors in an early hole. The Falcons rebounded well, maxing out with six in the top of two. The well rested defence held the home side to only one in response, and after two the Isotopes only led by one. The Falcon offence went on another brief vacation in the third, allowing the Isotopes to extend their lead with four in the bottom of the third. The Falcons kicked down the door in the fourth, putting up a MAX6 to take a brief lead until they gave it back in the bottom half. It was like this all game. Both teams, having already won one, knew a win meant a significant break before playing Sunday, and neither team wanted to concede. The Falcons tied it back up in the top of the fifth, but couldn't hold it allowing the Isotopes to score two. Down 15-13 going into the sixth, something sparked for the visitors. With the top of the order up to start the inning, the Falcons went single, walk, single, single, single, fielder's choice, single, to score 3 and have the bases loaded with one out. A Flash sac fly made it four in, and an SLF 3-run "bomb" (relatively speaking) capped off a seven run inning. The Isotopes yawned at this, and were ready. They scored four in the bottom of the sixth to get them to within one with an inning left. Unable to add any insurance in the seventh, the Falcons defence needed to hold the Isotopes to their first doughnut of the game if they wanted to avoid extras. The Isotopes opened the bottom of seven with a pop out to left, but sparked hope with a single but couldn't do anything after that.
Falcons 20, Isotopes 19.
Quarterfinal: Sunday, 11:30 am: Triple Play at Falcons
Down to only ten Falcons for Championship Sunday, it would be a long slog to bring home the hardware. Sunday morning's game was the toughest battle of the weekend for the Falcons. Despite jumping out to an 8-2 lead after two innings, Triple Play didn't roll over. Four in the third and two in the fourth tied the game after four. The Falcons re-took the lead after manufacturing a run in the fifth, only to allow Triple Play to tie it back up in the top of the sixth. Needing to put the game away, the Falcons strung together five hits and score four runs that would be the difference. The Falcons defence held in the seventh and it was on to the semis.
Falcons 13, Triple Play 9.
Semifinal: Sunday, 1:00 pm: Falcons at Broadway
Needing only two more victories to secure the second Falcons Playoff Tournament Championship in the last five years, the Falcons offence forgot to show up. Broadway hit every hole all game, maxing out in the third, and scoring fourteen in a never-ending fifth. The End.
Broadway 25, Falcons 5.
