assignment Falcons Bats Falter Late
Sunday 9:30PM August 21st, 2022
Inconsistent offence doomed the Falcons in a 21-16 loss to The Crew to cap off Sunday's doubleheader. After allowing The Crew to put up a fiver in the top of the first inning, the Falcons carried the momentum from the early game into this one and put up what I'm calling a slo pitch "immaculate inning", where a team scores the max runs allowed in the same number of plate appearances. Goliath's three-run shot ended the inning 6 batters after it began.
In response, The Crew only managed to send 4 batters to the plate before ending their turn at bat. The Falcons didn't fare much better though... they only sent 5 to the plate to match The Crew's delicious doughnut.
The bats, both composite and mammal, returned in the third inning. The first four Crew members to bat scored, and the living and breathing type of bat was witnessed crossing over the infield. The Crew's effort to protect their newly formed 3-run lead fell apart quickly in the bottom of the third: Barry Guerrero Jr and Dunner each singled, and were brought home by Beatty's league leading 22nd dinger of the year to tie it back up. The bats kept going all the way to a MAX6 to give the Falcons a three-run lead of their own...
... which they gave back in the top of the fourth. They missed that three-run lead like Cowboy misses his uninterrupted vas deferens, so they put up three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to get it back.
The Crew, that pesky, stubborn Crew, kept hitting. Two in the fifth to get within one, then five in the sixth to take the lead. They scored another pair in the top of the seventh for insurance.
The Falcons couldn't answer back. Their bats caught a sudden case of ED, and could only produce a single, impotent run over their last three turns to the plate.
Game notes: With the win, The Crew climbs to within a half-game of the Falcons for the (coveted?) 4-seed in the WMSPL playoff picture... The Falcons, meanwhile, trail Vice President's Division Champions Triple Play by 3 games for the #3 seed with only 5 games to go.
