assignment Shohei + Supersubs Power Falcons to First Win of 2024
Monday 9:30PM May 6th, 2024
A depleted Falcons squad made the most of a short lineup, scoring early and often in a win over Hanet Plastics, 25-10.Make no mistake, this was Flash’s Shohei’s night. The man formerly known as Flash acted like he was getting paid $70M a year and took over this game in every goddamn area:
1. Made the call to Dan (A’s), Darryl (A’s) and Duran (Storm) to save the seven Falcons who showed up from defaulting (and we’ll get to their contributions in a bit)
2. With Teets, Million Dollar Bill and Poutine all out, Shohei said “hold my Bud Light” and pitched six stellar innings, holding a very capable Hanet squad to doughnuts in the 1st, 4th and 5th, and so many 2-strike counts
3. Continued to rake at the plate, going 4 for 5 to raise his batting average to 0.778
4. Restocked the cooler with post-game beverages
5. BBQ’ed burgers and ribs after the game (this didn’t happen but, given the skills he showed at the symposium, Shohei would have taken care of the Falcons in this way as well)
If there was any soreness from playing in the rain on Friday, it didn’t show. Singles by Cowboy, Dunner (fresh off of the DL) and Beatty scored one, Skinner followed with a double and Shohei singled to stake the Falcons to an early 3-0 lead. The supersubs went to work in the 2nd: a Duran triple, a single and a double from the A’s, and the first triples of the year from Cowboy and Skinner led to a MAX6 (“This is what it feels like to be winning?” – Darryl).
Hanet broke through in the 3rd, scoring 5 to cut the lead to 11-6 after three. But the Falcons batted around in the 5th and the defence held the fort to cruise to their first win of the year.
Game notes: Cumulative stat line for our subs/new BFFs: 10/14 + SF, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 10 RBIs… Dunner picked up right where he left off in 2023, going 5 for 5… Skinner with another superb night, just a HR short of the cycle with 5 RBIs and holding very steady at SS… Beatty was robbed of two HRs that sounded like no-doubters off of the bat but somehow both came straight back down at the warning track… #1 fan SLF would have cheered RCF Duran’s sprinting catch in RF that Dan would have otherwise caught without moving… the Falcons get 8 days off until the next round of musical chair signouts.
