assignment Falcons Win Fifth Straight
Sunday 9:30PM May 26th, 2024
Only a Tuesday matchup with the A's stands between the Falcons and free beer after a terrific ballgame to close out Sunday's doubleheader that ended with the Falcons on top, 17-16.The Falcons' D picked up where they left off after their game against The Crew, holding Triple Play to a doughnut and only one hit in the top of the first inning. The offence was also still clicking, except when there was a runner on third base. In the bottom of the first alone, the pizza fund collected $15 on three missed opportunities with a runner only 65 feet away. In total for the night, the team stranded that runner SEVEN TIMES. A record? Maybe? Anyway, Cowboy led off the game with a triple, and despite his best Riverdance routine, couldn't score on Barry Guerrero Jr's subsequent ground out. Dunner walked, though unintentionally because it's May. Jr doubled to cash a duck, and Shohei followed with his own RBI single. Million Dollar Bill accrued the second SR3B of the inning when he couldn't cash Jr from third despite reaching base successfully. Teets ended the inning with a $10 groundout, socking a hard grounder to first where the first baseman scooped it, tagged Billy and jumped on first for a SR3B-GIDP inning-ender.
In the second, Triple Play's bats arrived, and they scored three runs on four singles and a sac fly. Down one, the Falcons erased the deficit in short order with a MAX6. Dr J doubled, Hands off singled and Cowboy cashed them both with his second consecutive triple. Cowboy's 51st career three-bagger put him at #1 all-time for the Falcons. Sr is feeling very Sr. Dunner, Jr and Shohei followed with single and Million Dollar Bill closed off the inning with his [checks notes] 14th career triple.
After holding Triple Play to another doughnut in the third, the Falcon bats continued to rack up the hits. After Teets' groundout to open the frame, five straight singles and Dunner's double put up four runs. The inning ended on yet another SR3B when Jr hit what should have been a routine sac fly to centre, but Barry Guerrero Jr was gunned down at the plate on a tremendous throw. Kudos to all the cannons Triple Play has amassed in their outfield.
Triple Play responded in the fourth, scoring 3 to begin chipping away at the Falcons' lead. The Falcons could only put up a singleton in the bottom of the frame. Taking advantage, Triple Play put up five more in the top of the fifth, all with two out by stringing together six hits. Stranding a runner on third for the fifth time in the game with less than two out, the Falcons only managed a single run. Going into the sixth, the lead had narrowed to 14-11.
The visitors' bats cooled off for the sixth. The Falcons clutch offence put up three much needed insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, despite stranding a runner on third twice more. Triple Play put a scare into the home side, scoring five of the six runs they needed to tie the game. The home fans exhaled.
Game Notes: Homie's notes: "New SS? Does Graham have some competition?"... The Pizza fund/uniform subsidy gathered a walloping $45 in this game... One win away from free beer... Without looking, who has a higher batting average: Cowboy, Jr or Dr J? Thanks to a red hot Sunday where he went eight-for-eight, Dr J is batting .778 (.810 OBP), matching Jr and seventy points higher than Cowboy... Shohei is batting .750, for those keeping track.
